Bad breath in dogs: solutions exist
Very unpleasant for us during moments of tenderness, bad breath in dogs can also be a sign of a real health problem. The first cause of bad breath (also called halitosis) is tartar.
Tartar in dogs is caused by dental plaque that becomes mineralized and creeps under the gums to the point of loosening the teeth. Tartar is a real nest for bacteria. These bacteria then enter the bloodstream and can invade organs such as the heart and kidneys, thus presenting a real danger to your pet's health. For more information on tartar, consult our corresponding health sheet: Dog tartar. Prevention is better than cure: good daily habits can prevent tartar removal at the veterinarian. There are more and more solutions to limit tartar formation in dogs, and they are not restrictive for either you or your dog.
Unless your dog is particularly fond of brushing his teeth (see the dog brushing and toothpaste kits), you can simply add an aqueous solution to his drinking water: Vet Aquadent, or a powder to his kibble: Prozym Plaque Off.
Kibbles is also highly recommended because they promote chewing and therefore a mechanical action on tartar. Some kibbles for diabetic dogs are specifically designed to contribute even more specifically to oral hygiene.
Even better, cleaning teeth can become a real pleasure for your dog. Toothpaste without rinsing has been specifically designed for dogs and has a taste studied for their greatest pleasure (e.g.: RF2 Wax from Sogeval, Enzymatic Toothpaste from Virbac, Bucogel, etc.). If you are unable to use them because your dog is not used to them at a young age, offer him chewable strips, such as Sogeval's Prozym strips, or even treats in the form of cookies or chewable bones that help prevent tartar and therefore bad breath. You'll be treated just as much as your dog!
Don't forget that bad breath can have other origins: dental or oral infections and abscesses, rhinitis, general illnesses such as kidney failure, or even maldigestion due to low quality or unsuitable diet. If you have any doubts about your pet's health and the cause of bad breath, don't hesitate to consult your veterinarian. Vaccination visits also give your veterinarian the opportunity to check your dog's oral health annually, so don't miss out.
