What are the hairless cat breeds?

You've probably already seen these hairless cats, but you didn't know what breed they were? Then let us introduce you to some of them and their characteristics.

Discover the list of hairless cats below.

The Donskoy

The Donskoy is a real star in the international arena thanks to its physical particularity due to its lack of fur, but also to its character and its very pleasant appearance.

His good reputation comes from his many qualities:

  • Muscular
  • Elegant
  • Sociable
  • Affectionate
  • Active

You will not scare others with this breed of the cat since it is absolutely not aggressive and very nice. It can even be a little sticky sometimes...

So, he will be a very good company for you and hopefully, you will be a good company for him too.

The Sphynx

Also called "naked cat", the sphynx is a hairless cat as its name indicates. It is not only this characteristic that makes this cat a very good pet.

Indeed, it is impossible not to fall for him when you know that he is:

  • Affectionate
  • Calm
  • Sociable
  • Intelligent

His skin color is the same color as his hair should have been.

This cat is not completely naked as we tend to say, it has in fact a fine down which, gives the sensation of touching a peach and is strongly similar to a chamois.

The character of the Sphynx is much the same as that of the Donskoy. In short, it will also be a very good company.

The Peterbald

This breed of cat was born from a cross between two breeds, the Donskoy and the Oriental. It physically resembles its fellow cats without hair, the Donsky, and the Sphynx. It is thus by its character that it differs from them.

Indeed, it is a cat :

  • Dynamic
  • Extraverted
  • Lively

It will be necessary to pay particular attention to this cat because it does not appreciate at all remaining alone. It will require a lot of attention from its owner and may therefore appear to some owners a little clingy ...

The Devon Rex has a short hair

The Devon Rex is different from the other cats on this list because, unlike the others, he has very short hair.

If the wonderful previous cats did not convince you because you are afraid of cats without hair, the Devon Rex will be a good alternative for you.

It is atypical in its short hair, but also in its big ears.

Like the previous ones on this list, this cat has many qualities:

  • Muscular
  • Intelligent
  • Lively
  • Happy

It will require, like the others, particular and permanent attention from its owner, because it does not support loneliness either.

What does a hypoallergenic cat mean?

A hypoallergenic cat is a cat that is less allergenic. In fact, many breeds of cats produce a protein called "FEL D1" in smaller quantities than non-hypoallergenic cats. It is this protein that is responsible for allergies to cat hair.

This allows people who are usually allergic to cats to reduce their allergy to this type of cat.

People who are allergic to cats can also adopt hairless cats such as the Sphynx and will not have to worry about hair shedding.

Naked cat: is it a genetic mutation?

Many of you are probably wondering what the reason for the hairlessness is.

In fact, it is a natural genetic mutation that causes the cat to be hairless. This is the reason why these cats are rare the gene responsible for the mutation is rare itself. This gene is also called the "bald gene" which is also present in some breeds of dogs.

Beware of sunburn

Hairless cats are even more susceptible to sunburn than other breeds of cats because their skin is directly exposed to the sun.

It is therefore important to take care of your cat in the face of the danger of the sun. To do this, here are the precautions to take:

  • The cat must have a shady and cool place in case of strong heat
  • Protect your cat with sun cream for this type of animal (be careful not to use the same cream as for humans)
  • Do not walk your cat during the day
